Ohio Bill Seeks to Ban Human-Chatbot Marriages
Ohio State Representative Thaddeus Claggett has introduced House Bill 469, legislation that would void any attempt to marry or form a personal union with an AI system. The bill explicitly denies legal recognition to relationships between humans and chatbots, including VIRTUAL ceremonies or engagements. While such unions currently lack legal standing in most states, the measure positions Ohio as a pioneer in defining boundaries for artificial intelligence in personal relationships.
The trend of human-chatbot bonding, fueled by desires for unconditional support and constant availability, has gained traction in online communities. Critics argue these connections risk undermining human social dynamics. Ohio's proposal goes further by also rejecting "personhood" for AI systems, ensuring humans retain full legal responsibility for any harm caused by their use of artificial intelligence.
